OOOH SO CLOSE! Australian Youth rider Samantha Mullan came within just half a point of making the finals in the Senior Youth division 2008 Scholarship cutting held at the NCHA Summer Spectacular at Fort Worth, Texas. Samantha used to live in Western Australia and got taught how to ride cutting horses by Ricky Glenn. When samantha wanted to take cutting to the next level her parents Darren and Emma started to look for a suitable place on the east coast to live, because the cutting was far bigger on that side of the country . They came across Aaron Wheatlys place in Shepparton in Victoria and were very keen on this place So they hauled their quarter horse stud "xtreme quarter horses " all the way across the Nulabour and soon settled .Whilst all of the Mullin's horses were being hauled acroos the Nullabor, Samantha started to show there palomino stud horse "Oak so smart " in the senior youth cuttings placing at every show. Finally after the rest of the horses arrived Samantha started to show "Doc's Electra", "Freckles Bonita Two", "Spicys Plagirl" and "Roys Covergirl". Trainer Jamie creek would come down and help Samantha get her horses ready for the shows and if Darren could'nt go to a show Jamie would be willing to take her. Darren and Samantha travelled to nearly every show they possibly could and there was rarely a show Samantha didn't place at. By the end off the 2007 show year Samantha had taken out the area 7 Senior Youth Champion and the area 9 Senior Youth Champion, to top it all off the NCHA National Senior Youth Champion. Samantha was given a return ticket to the USA. Before Samantha left to go to America , there was a show held at the Wyuna cutting club, her father put in late entries for her in the senior youth on 2 mares that she had not ridden for over 6 months. Samantha was 17th and 18th in the herd and on the last horses Docs Electra went out and won, she also placed with her other horse Freckles Bonita Two. With guidance from Jamie Creek and Ricky Glenn, Samantha decided to take the opportunity to go to Slate River Ranch in Weatherford Texas. John Mitchell, an ex pat Australinan, is the manager and trainer of Slate River Ranch. They organised for Samantha to show in the youth at the Summer Spectacular on the High Brow Cat gelding "Squeaky Cat ". Samantha marked a 213 on this gelding, unfortunately missing the final by half a point. Samantha said she got nervous on the first cow and after she put the horse down on her first cut she nervously piked her hand up again there were three judges so she lost a total of 3 points. She said it was a silly mistake "but you learn from these things", Samantha ended up placing equal 45th in the go round out of 172 riders so she was very pleased with her results. Samantha had a wonderful time learning and showing one of the Slate River Ranch horses and she plans to keep going back to America and competing. Samantha's mum and dad ,Jamie Creek and Ricky Glenn have all helped Samantha to achieve everything she wanted to. Now samantha has a 2yr old in training with Jamie Creek and she hopes to compete in the Non Pro Futurity she has also been showing Jamie's derby horses in the youth and doing well. |
