HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS
Thrills, a spill, wind, sleet, rain, sunshine, even a rogue calf, you name it the WALCHA Cutting Horse Association show at Kentucky had it all. Not to mention some great cutting and entertainment.
With around 100 entries per day the two jackpot shows attracted some fantastic horses and despite the cold windy conditions the standard of cutting was exceptional. This was the first show for WALCHA CHA since E.I but there was very little sign of cobwebs with very few points separating the top four or five placings in many events.
Despite the occasional banter Geoff Schnitzerling copped from his help throughout the week end, he finally managed to choose the right cattle in his final event of the week end to get equal highest score of the show with a 73.5 on Buster Groove in the Open Non Pro. Ian Merrick on Paraweena Stylish Lady was given the same score in the $10,000 Novice also on the Sunday.
It was also a great opportunity for many of the Non Pros to get expert advice from the likes of Rob Hodgeman, Phil Gray, Paul Webb and Ian Merrick. Accomplished Non Pros like Sue and Dominic Williams and Wayne Bauman also worked tirelessly as herd help as well as giving tips to fellow riders.
The show also attracted some generous sponsorship with the Walsh family digital colour Australia, Jobs Australia and major sponsor, Kentucky Station, donating cash, Metalcorp donating horse feed and Norco throwing in a couple of saddle racks in addition to the prize money already on offer. The highest score of the week end also attracted a beautiful sketched print donated by Annie Kenniff.
All in all a great show, great atmosphere and great fun, and as for that rogue calf?. If anyone in the Kentucky area comes across a stray, approach with caution and with only one thing in mind .... Barbecue.
