LECTRIC PLAYBOY TO CALL AUSTRALIA HOME

1997 NCHA World Champion Stallion and NCHA Million Dollar Sire, Lectric Playboy is on his way to Australia in time for the 2008 breeding season. The champion stallion is currently in California waiting to be shuttled to Australia for an August 1st arrival.

Lectric is owned by the Lectric company syndicate including managing partners Northern Rivers Cutting Horse Club President Bill Cox and original trainer Terry Clifford, an ex pat Australian who is now an extremely successful trainer in the US. According to Terry, Lectric Playboy was the horse that started his career as a cutting horse trainer and showed him how to win. Terry purchased him for a client at Fort Worth as a yearling and broke, started and trained him with the NCHA Futurity in mind. At the Futurity he was a semifinalist and missed making the finals by one point competing with an injured hock. After several months off to heal, Lectric’s next outing was the NCHA SuperStakes where he again made the semifinals after scoring high in both go rounds. After the SuperStakes he was showed at some weekend cuttings to season him more and work on consistency. In July, he returned to Fort Worth for the Summer Spectacular, a more experienced competitor and eased through the preliminary rounds and semi-finals into the finals, this was their first Fort Worth finals appearance and the pair finished in the Top Ten. It was about this time Lectric really found his stroke. Shortly after, he was the Derby Champion at the Nevada Cutting Spectacular marking a 150 and also winning the first go round with a 148.

As a five year old, Lectric made the finals at almost every event he contested including the NCHA Summer Spectacular where he also won the $10,000 Added Open, one of the most competitive Opens in the country, defeating horses like Jae Bar Fletch, Meradas Little Sue and Bet Your Blue Boon to name a few. He was also the champion of the Pacific Coast Classic/Challenge and the champion of the Gold Coast Classic/Challenge that same year.

As a six year old in 1997 Lectric was sold for the grand sum of $450,000 cash. In February 1997 Lectric was shipped to Texas for the breeding season to stand at Babcock Ranch in Gainesville, Texas.

In 1997 Terry showed Lectric for his new owners, a syndicate called The Lectric Company, at the Super Stakes where he made the Classic/Challenge finals and then at the Summer Spectacular where he fell in the second go round eliminating him and then came back the next day to mark a 228 in the finals of the $10,000 Added Open to win the Champion Trophy, making it 2 years in a row, again amongst the toughest open horses in the country.

At this point the bridle reins were handed to Mark Kelly. As a trainer and part owner of the horse, Mark began hauling Lectric, showing him in the Open and also the remainder of his aged events with great success, making the finals of the Abilene Western Classic, The Southern Futurity Classic Champion and the El Cid Classic Reserve Champion. Altogether Lectric made 15 NCHA major Limited Aged Event Finals. At the end of the 1997 show season Lectric was named NCHA World Champion Stallion and was retired from the show arena at the young age of seven.

As a Sire, Lectric has produced 66 performers with LTE over $1.2 million and climbing, in the sport of Cutting alone. His top performers are Lectric Boom LTE $120,000 and the 10,000 Novice Non Pro World Champion of 2006. Lectric Brakes LTE $100,000 an NCHA Futurity Finalist and many time major event finalist, who is out a Smart Little Lena mare that is out of the famous Little Peppy daughter Little Badger Dulce. Lectric Lena LTE $67,000 NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic 4th, NCHA SuperStakes Finalist and Bonanza Cutting Classic 4th. Also out of a Smart Little Lena, Mr San Peppy Cross, LHR Lectric X Two LTE $70,000 multiple NCHA aged event finalist whose dam is a daughter of Doc’s Oak (the Sire of Docs Spinifex). Lectric has proven to be a very good cross over Smart Little Lena daughters and has also been proven strongly on Doc Bar and Peppy bred mares as well. Lectric Playboy has produced earners of over $200,000 in PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) barrel racing, and roping type events & NRCHA (National Reined Cow Horse Association) events.

With Lectric’s strong foundation pedigree on his bottom side he provides a great outcross for most of our modern day bred mares. Lectric’s Dam Lectro Milligan herself an accomplished cutting mare with earnings over $36,000 is by two time AQHA Super Horse, Leonard Milligan who gained many wins at Halter, Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Reining, Working Cowhorse and Roping Events. Lectric’s Bottom Side consisted mostly of Three Bars, Leo and King Breeding, all very close up on his papers. Plus a double cross of Oklahoma Star, the sire of the Clover Leaf famed foundation sire Jackhammer.

Terry says that Lectric is a prolific performer in his own right and a highly proven producer and is of the opinion he has done this with very little exposure to the so called “Great Producing mares” in the business. At the end of 2005 Terry was approached by The Lectric Company to buy an interest and take over managing Lectric Playboy – which he gladly agreed to doing.

"In 2006, we sent frozen semen to Australia for the first time where we felt a warm reception and gained 13 pregnancies, 2 negative embryo transfers and 1 mare open. Ian Francis, Robert Baldwin, Vince Bonello, Russ Benson, Rob Hodgman, Dave Christensen, Bob Guest, Bill Cox, bred to him in 2006 to name a few. Stewart Keller, DVM in Tamworth told me last year at the Futurity that we had an 87% first cycle success rate with frozen semen which is outstanding. It was also his opinion that Lectric would breed a lot more mares in Australia if he were there in the flesh, which gave me food for thought”.

With an overabundance of young stallions hitting the breeding scene in the USA and the definite need for an outcross horse in Australia at this time, Terry decided that this may be the perfect time to shuttle Lectric to Australia.

“It is my belief that even though Lectric is a proven producer of Cutting performers, he has not yet tapped his full potential as a breeder due to lack of exposure to true champion type performers and producers. I believe that freshly imported horses quite often get a great chance to reach these better mares and would certainly like Lectric to get this opportunity”.

“ At some point all of the hot blood and linebreeding has to be balanced with an outcross and Lectric is all that on top of being a fantastic athlete and cowsmart. He has proven that he can pass this on and I am excited for his prospects as a Sire in Australia. He is a horse for the times”.
