PEPTOS STYLISH OAK FILLY WINS DERBY
There will be a lot of smiles on Aussies faces today in particular Ricky Glen and Barry Ryan after Peptos Stylish Sue, a mare by Peptos Stylish Oak won the NCHA Derby at this years NCHA Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth. Ridden by Boyd Rice the roan mare scored 224 points third out. No one caught her. Reserve Champion was Playin N Fancy Smart a mare by Smart Little Lena.
Despite earning over $1.3 million in career earnings, this was trainer Boyd Rices first major event victory in Fort Worth. Boyd describes the mare as " pretty much the same every time I show her and she’s real cow smart,” Peptos Stylish sue is out of a mare by Mr Freckles O'lena a stallion of Colenel Freckles - Doc O'Lena breeding. Boyd descrobed the ride. “My first and second cows were really good. I wasn’t going to cut the last cow, but it stopped out there in the right spot, and it was probably the best cow I cut. It was real aggressive.”
The win earned $75,000 in prizemoney for the mare. Pepto's Stylish Oak has long been an importnat part of the Australian breeding programme with Australian breeders identifying his ability as a sire many years ago. He has sired many big event winners in Australia including last years Toowoomba and Goondiwindi Futurity Champion, One Stylish Pepto. As well as NCHA futurity reserve champion One Roan Peptos.
Peptos Stylish Oak was unable to be shuttled back to the US for their breeding season last year, and is standing at stud in Australia. It would appear that Australia is becoming a very important testing ground for the breeding potential of lesser known US bred stallions and is well on the way to offering the US viable outcrosses for their breeding stock in the future.
Aussie Trainer John Mitchell finished equal ninth on the High Brow Cat mare Sarahs Super Cat. They scored 213.5. John also finished equal twelvth riding Peptos Stylish Miss, a mare by Peptoboonsmal with a 212 score.
Kiwi Clint Allen scored 217 on Peppers Sylish Cat to finish outright fifth. Peppers Stylish Cat is by High Brow Cat.
All eyes will now be the upcoming Futurities down under with Werribee first off the rank at the end of this month.
