Steeldust is acclaimed as being the very first Quarter Horse type. He stood just over 15.1 Hands and weighed around 1200 lbs. He was pure P.O.W.E.R. Him and his offspring were described as “having a low centre of gravity with the length of legs not exceeding the depth of the heart girth. Fabulous heavy muscled, powerful hindquarters and deep V between the forelegs. good bone and foot. A very trainable disposition with a high degree of intelligence and natural cow sense”.
Oh yeah did I mention that he was very very fast. Before the introduction of the Quarter Horse breed the type that was known as the first American Quarter horse were the Bulldog types known back then as Steeldusts. They were very popular and sought after by the ranch hands of the nineteenth century.

Let's not forget that back in the 1800's the horses were multi purpose, he pulled a plough, rustled cattle and on the week ends won his owner a gallon of grog or two in the odd match race. Steeldust was born in Illinois in 1843 and was brought over to Texas as a youngster. He quickly became a legend as a very accomplished match racehorse. So much so that eventually no one was keen to race against him. So he spent many years ploughing the fields and rustling the cattle, until as twelve year old he was challenged to a match race against another legendary match race horse Manmouth. It was accepted that the older horse was no match for the younger speedster. The blood bay was the long shot and sent many a punter bankrupt on that day. As a sixteen year old he was injured before a race and never raced again.

Steeldust can be found in the bloodlines of many well known

cutting horses including Doc Bar, Highbrow Cat, Dual Rey, Freckles Playboy, Peppy etc etc. It's notable though that out of all of them Highbrow Cat traces back to him the most - 88 times.

Steeldust is also a notable ingredient in another famous family, the Old Billy family. This is the result of crossing a daughter of Steeldust with another well known match racehorse of that day Shiloh . In fact Shiloh was the horse that Steeldust was supposed to race against when he injured his shoulder. Shiloh galloped over the finish line to claim the forfeit and the answer to the question who was fastest was never answered.
