Of the three new sections added to the Justcuttin' Sale Barn, Hawkins Equine Breeding Centre is the latest. Now a household name in breeding circles the centre was started in the 1999 breeding season after a change in vocation for its founder, Donna Murphy was required.  “Morning Sun Ranch was looking for somewhere to stand their new young stallion Peptos Stylish Oak in the east. I decided that it would be nice to do something that I enjoyed, looking after horses and get paid for it” says Donna.

Husband Chris joined Donna in the year of 2000 and together they stood Pepto for 4 years covering over 350 mares. It was a very busy time for the couple indeed. Since those beginnings the Hawkins Equine Centre has stood some of Australia's best imports including, Dmac Daddy, Racketeer Cat, Lectric Playboy and most recently and still standing there today, Teles Again. Teles Again is a freshman sire at this year's futurity and if the US futurity is any indication his progeny are sure to make an impact at Tamworth in 2011.

Of course Donnas own stallion NCHA 2000 Derby champion Jazzy Little Spin also stands there and in the last 3 years they have had the privilege to have Docs Argyle, who earned just over $40,000 in the cutting pen, “at 22 years of age he is still the greatest cutting horse to have ever graced an Australian arena”. Argyle is no slouch as a sire either, currently sitting at #15 in the all time leading sires of money earners in Australia with earnings of just over $188,000.

The grand old boy Tommy's Tucker calls the Hawkins Equine Breeding Centre home too. At 33 this stud with LTE of just under $17,000 is no longer breeding any mares but always makes his presence known.

“Our specialty here is mare care and we really enjoy the birth of all the new foals, and watching them prosper”. The centre also houses mares for frozen and embryo work. “I have been lucky enough to have had some of the best mares here to care for and it is always nice to see the progeny go on in the industry”. You just have to take a look at the first class condition of the quality horses the Hawkins are offering for sale in the sale barn to see just how well cared for these horses are.
