Non Pro Forum August

As you regulars are aware from time to time I update you about the Non Pro Forum that NCHA Chairman of Non Pros, Ron Perel started earlier this year. Ron has recently sent me an email asking me to remind all you Non Pros out there that the forum is still going and he would greatly appreciate some input. These comments are taken on board without retribution. I will let Ron Continue as printed in the recent Chatta magazine. There is some very interesting correspondence between Ron and a US contact regarding the new Non Pro Slot system introduced for next years Futurity.

Hi members, well we are into the August Forum, and so far we are getting some really great info, especially in the areas of shows. All this information can hopefully incorporated into the affiliate workshops. It looks like due to the Futurity & the cut off date for the August CHATTA there weren't any new comments. So instead off sulking & abusing all you slackers I thought I might publish a couple of interesting articles & thoughts:

The first is the real reason for the Non Pro Forum

The Non Pro Forum exists for the purpose of informing, uniting and educating all those interested in the great sport of cutting. My primary goal in starting the Non Pro Forum was to give all cutting horse enthusiasts the opportunity to be heard and/or contribute their cutting opinions and experiences to other cutters in an open discussion format without fear of recrimination. My hope is that this Forum will help to make the sport of cutting even better than it is by welcoming and helping all who wish to participate - from the professional trainer to the person riding their first cutting horse.

"Growth and Prosperity slows as ego and greed grows"

I had a really good article for you; however our publishers are worried about copy right laws. I WILL ENDEAVOUR TO GET THIS PRINTED AS IT IS REALLY WHAT CUTTING IS ABOUT.

Since we have commenced NP Futurity slots, I have been asked “nay” abused as to why we did not introduce open futurity slots. I therefore have tried to (through some contacts in the USA ) ask them why this was not introduced in the land of cutting. Here are some of the answers. Which are pretty interesting? (Please understand these have been published as received)

These are the questions I asked:

RP) Hi Guys I am not sure if any of you can answer my question?
I am an Aussie cutter & we have just introduced Non-Pro Futurity slots for our 2010 Futurity. I have asked the question which no one seems to be able to answer.
Why do you not have the slot system for the open futurity ? To me it does not make sense, as the majority of our owners are NP's, it would be great to be able to decide on your open entry at the last minute.
I am sure that there must be a good reason for the decision.

RESPONSE) it is thought that the money would be less...your hair would curl if you knew how much of the NCHA purses were made up of late penalty $$$.  Also, many open horses begin paying in, but don't make it for whatever reason, and that money stays in there as well.  If all of those folk knew they would be taking 1 or 2 to Ft Worth, they would pay that slot/slots...not the 10 promising colts up...

RP) . I accept that is the case, (it would be interesting to know how much money is added to the purse due to those reasons, or is it secret?)However do you think that futurities should be run, for the purpose of penalizing the entrants i.e. the NCHA members, who are the owners & biggest supporters? If that is the case how does this affect the NP slots? I am asking these questions out of pure ignorance, as I previously stated this is our first year of trying NP slots. I would have thought that having open futurity slots would have been embraced as a fair method.

RESPONSE) All I know is that it (the futurity) originally was meant to be something to build toward...start out paying in a little, pay as you go, a gamble toward the future...in the open, the entry is the horse.
It does not seem fair, and I do not know why the np's get a slot system, but the entry is the rider (on an eligible horse).
The one futurity (a few years ago) that I heard the figures on, the penalty money was near $50,000 - and all was added to the payout.  This was in all classes.  Am's and NP's still have late payments as well.  I do not think it is a secret, I just have not asked recently what the penalties have added up to.

RP) I am pretty interested in knowing what the reasons are? I am one of the people who have been advocating the Slots, & I have got the Board on my side. However if you guys believe you have made a mistake by not allowing Open slots, I would love to know. I think we should have them. Yes sure we as an association might loose some entry money into the Futurity, however if it is good for the members why not? I just don't want to make the same mistakes that you guys might have made. Hind sight is a fantastic weapon.
Something that fascinates me is the fact that you are the only guy to answer my question. I would of thought that if the issue is that hot, there would of been a lot more replies. Maybe the members do not care one way or the other?

RESPONSE) This is only hearsay, but I had heard at onetime that as many as 1400 horses start out paying in the Open Futurity. If I am correct, there are usually about 680-700 final entries. Do the maths, if they get $200 for 700 horses that didn't make the cut. Lots of money

The Board will most likely shoot me however remember that the majority of open horses are entered by NP's

What do you guys think of this?

Cheers
